Mueller’s next residential community is just around the corner. Following the bend of the Northwest Greenway, Greenway Lofts, LLC is breaking ground on a 36-unit residential development adjacent to the Seton Family of Hospitals’ administrative offices and Mueller’s future town center. The first residents are anticipated to move in by fall/winter 2010.

Priced between the $150,000s and low-$300,000s, the four-story Greenway Lofts will feature one- and two-bedroom homes ranging from approximately 600 to 1,200 square feet. Each home will include 9 ½-foot ceilings with energy-efficient, expansive windows and balconies or patios facing the Northwest Greenway. Homes on the upper floors will offer stunning views of downtown Austin, the State Capitol and the UT Tower while first-floor residents will have direct access to Mueller’s hike & bike trail.

Inside, each residence will feature open floor plans and desirable standard finishes such as stained concrete or wood flooring, ENERGY STAR stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and glass tile backsplashes in the kitchen and bathrooms, as well as walk-in showers and closets. Homes will also include reserved parking in the attached garage.
Built by general contractor Lott Brothers Construction, Greenway Lofts is anticipated to meet or exceed a three-star energy efficiency rating in Austin Energy’s award-winning Green Building program. For additional details, visit
www.greenwaylofts.com or the sales center located next to the Browning Hangar and the Mueller Central information center near Airport and Mueller Boulevards.

“The vision of Mueller as a mixed-use community with a broad range of residential offerings continues to take shape as the Greenway Lofts begin construction,” said Greg Weaver, president for Catellus. “Combined with Mueller’s first rental community and the handful of single-family homes available in Mueller’s first phase, Mueller continues to provide unique, yet compatible residential offerings to those seeking a New Urban, sustainable lifestyle in the heart of Austin.”

After years of extensive planning, the Austin Children’s Shelter has completed its new facility that will offer the ability to provide emergency shelter as well as longer term residential care for abused and neglected children and youth. In this expanded facility, ACS will ultimately care for as many as 78 children at a time and increase its programs to include an on-site charter school and family-based support services. Built on 13 acres adjacent to Mueller, the new campus of five “cottages” and three program support buildings is designed to safeguard children with some areas in the campus not generally open to the public.

Please join us for this one opportunity to tour the entire site of our new campus and celebrate our 25th anniversary on Wednesday, October 7, 2009 from 5:00-7:00pm.

Activities will include:

Campus tours by Austin Children’s Shelter Guild members

Minis and Friends – Little Horses, Big Hearts

ACS Kids Council Lemonade Stand

Live Music from The Biscuit Brothers (courtesy of A Texas Christmas Carol and other artists), and musical artist Elizabeth Wills

Tastings from Which Wich, Tres Amigos, Stardust Pastry and EL CHILE CAF É Y CANTINA

Interactive Play-Doh Station for the kids

SunFlowers – An Electric Garden is complete. Located at Mueller along IH-35, Austin’s largest public art project will officially illuminate tonight, Thursday, July 30th, and you are invited to join us.

We’ll begin to gather at 7:30 p.m. in the Northwest Greenway near where Philomena Street ends. Remarks will begin at approximately 8:15 p.m. with a walk along the trail to follow. Here are a few more event details:

In addition to capturing solar energy to glow at night, the SunFlowers rely on sensors to determine when they will begin illuminating. We can’t precisely predict when the SunFlowers will turn on, but we know it has to be dark — so bring a flashlight and enjoy the trail. We’ll be in a park setting, so bring the family, consider packing a snack or spread out for a picnic (don’t forget the bug spray)!

Free parking is available at the Mueller retail center or along Philomena and Robert Browning streets (south of both the retail center and Dell Children’s Medical Center near the new Seton office building).

Hope to see you out there!

Designed by Mags Harries and Lajos Heder, “SunFlowers – An Electric Garden” creates a bold landmark at the west entrance to Mueller, casting patterns of shade along the hike and bike trail during the day and using the power collected through its solar panels to glow at night. SunFlowers extends nearly 540 feet in length; the 15 sculptures range in height from more than 18 – 24 feet above the footpath and the photovoltaic “petals” form blossoms that reach 13 to 15 feet in diameter. For more information on SunFlowers – An Electric Garden including the artists, selection of the art and its self-sustaining solar arrays, you can visit solarsunflowers.muelleraustin.com.

Set your calendars for May 23 through June 7, 2009, when the Home Builders Association (HBA) of Greater Austin presents the 56th annual Parade of Homes™ tour at Mueller hosted by Catellus Development Group. This year’s Parade of Homes™, the first in Central Austin in decades, will be unlike any other as it focuses on ultra-green, ultra-urban homes from a group of exclusively local home builders: Bill Taute Homes, Cool River Custom Homes, Durrett Interests, The Muskin Company and Streetman Homes.

The official Parade of Homes™ tour allows visitors to check out the latest in architecture, interior decorating, landscape design and green-building features. These homes, starting at approximately $1 million, are anticipated to be the first in Central Texas to earn three energy efficiency ratings: (1) a five-star rating in the nationally recognized Austin Energy Green Building program, (2) LEED® certification from the U.S. Green Building Council and (3) green building silver level certification from the National Association of Home Builders. The homes on the tour will range from 3,200 – 3,700 square feet.

The Parade will be open Thursday – Tuesday weather permitting. Tickets will be $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and children ages 5-17, and free for children under age 5. For more information about tickets, parking and event features, visit www.AustinHomeBuilders.com.

10 years ago in May 1999, the last flight left Robert Mueller Municipal Airport and signified the closing of Austin’s first airport. The return flights landed at Austin Bergstrom International Airport and planning for how to reuse the 711 acres that was the former airport continued. Now, with over 20 years of planning and four years of construction, progress in Mueller can be widely seen. Over 500 homes are sold and over 3,000 employees call Mueller home. 75 acres of parks are completed and three historic structures still stand.
